Finished a short interview with radio host Carl Lanore (superhumanradio.com) yesterday regarding my fears about excessive dosing with vitamin D. Seems the push for high dose vitamin D is everywhere. Persons I would have considered reliable are suggesting ongoing doses of vitamin D greater than 2,000 IU daily and this with no warning of the combined effects of sun exposure and dosing. One 'expert' suggests 4,000 IU daily plus cod liver oil. It makes me sad to think of the silent damage to willing human guinea pigs and the poor state of 'science' that seems now to work from consensus and popularization instead of carefully reasoned data.
Critical thinking is certainly not being taught to our children nor being used by the adults. The idea that high dose anything will have long term benefit is without merit. The human bodies (and all living things) are dynamic and require a balance of 'things' to function well over time. We all need D but how much we need and how we best get D is an individual matter, not to be decided by nor regulated by institutions, policies, authorities (including medical authorities) or governments. Self care is always the best care.
Handing over responsibility for ones health to others will diminish wellness. Believing and applying the latest 'magic pill/herb/oil/food/vitamin/mineral' will as likely damage as cure our ills. With rare exceptions health is the result of consuming real, genetically appropriate (honor your ancestors) food, engaging in 90 minutes of significant, appropriate, daily exercise, maintaining good relationships with family and friends, breathing clean air, and drinking pure water.
